Come and stay by the beautiful North Norfolk coast
Overstrand is a pretty coastal fishing village close to the town of Cromer. It was made famous in Victorian times by Clement Scott, the London Drama and Literary critic. It was he who named the area Poppyland. From his published articles in the Daily Telegraph came a constant flow of London's most famous acting community to visit and stay in Overstrand. The village is populated with large, interesting and quirky houses from that time.
Overstrand offers several amenities including a village shop and post office, pubs, restaurants, a church, a seaside cafe and easy access to the beautiful long sandy beaches. There are also several country treks and, for the more adventurous, a spectacular mile-long cliff walk from Overstrand to the nearby town of Cromer. |
A house with history
Danum House was built in 1818 in the style of the Arts and Crafts Movement and is situated in the popular Poppyland coastal area of North Norfolk. A feature of the property is the original oak panel walls in all reception rooms. Quiet and peaceful Danum House, though modernised, is a historic house that still retains its Old World charm.
Danum House was once owned by Florence Barclay, the well known authoress of the Rosary and many other novels. Her original writing desk can be found in the drawing room.
This house was also home to the Countess of Yarborough and her husband John Maunsell Richardson (nicknamed Cat Richardson) who, in his day, was known as the best gentleman National Hunt jockey in England. Richardson won every major steeplechase race twice including the Grand National in 1873 and 1874.
